Isaiah 62 Prayer Letter - September 2020

Dear prayer partners,

We thank you for being part of our collective prayer efforts once again this month. These are difficult days for the whole world, and the power of our unified prayers are needed more than ever to help us all meet the challenges which lie ahead. This is an especially challenging time for our ministry, as our staff here in Jerusalem is preparing for a Feast of Tabernacles celebration which will be unlike anything we have ever done before.

Many Christians around the world have felt the call to a more intensive prayer life over the recent months of the Corona crisis. And it is quite common to hear appeals once more to that familiar summons to national repentance in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

For this to work, we all know well the need for humility before the Lord, and for prayer and repentance. But we sometimes overlook the call to “seek My face.” This is a common concept in Scripture. We find it, for instance, in 1 Chronicles 16:11, Psalm 24:6, Psalm 105:4, and Hosea 5:15. But do we really know what it means to “seek the face” of the Lord.

One night many years ago, the Lord startled me from my sleep with a very clear call: “David, seek My face!” I managed a few minutes of prayer before I dozed off again, but I knew God was serious. It was the bracing way He said my name, the urgency and echo of eternity in His voice. So as I began to respond more fully the next day, I asked the Lord just what does it mean to “seek His face.” He quickly answered: “To seek My face is to seek your own future.”

At the time, I was still young in my walk with the Lord. But I knew I had a high calling on my life and that He was urging me to get serious about it. The time had come for me to no longer rely on my parents or my pastor or someone else to hear from God for me. Rather, it was time for me to take responsibility for my own walk and calling, to pursue the Lord and hear straight from Him about His path for my life.

These were all intriguing thoughts, and I was greatly encouraged to find them affirmed in Scripture. King David said: “Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me. When You said, ‘Seek My face,’ My heart said to You, ‘Your face, Lord, I will seek.’ Do not hide Your face from me; Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not leave me nor forsake me, O God of my salvation. When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take care of me.” (Psalm 27:7-10)

To seek the face of the Lord is to seek His will and plan for your life. It is also searching out whether there is anything in your life blocking the way ahead or hindering the Lord’s favour over you. And all of this can also extend to your family, fellowship, community or nation.

The Aaronic Blessing (Numbers 6:24-26) contains the notion that God wants to “shine His face upon you,” and to “lift His countenance upon you.” But sometimes He must turn His face away because of things we have done, and it is up to us to seek His face through prayer and repentance, so that He can look upon us and smile at us once more – with all the blessings and grace and shalom that come with it.

This can sometimes be an uncomfortable task. But ultimately, it is quite encouraging to think that when we “seek His face”, we are simply seeking the best for our own future.

May the Lord shine His face upon you this month as we seek the Lord together in prayer.

Shalom from Jerusalem!
